Many people think that bus idling is not a big problem. However, bus idling is a huge problem. Our class is studying bus idling and its effects on people’s health.
Bus idling is very serious in our community because 500,000 people have asthma in New York. Asthma is one of the many effects of bus idling because bus idling affects our respiratory system. Other effects of bus idling are leukemia, lung cancer, pneumonia, flu, tuberculosis, bronchitis, respiratory diseases for newborns, and many more. Irritants in the air such as cigarette smoke often trigger asthma. Some other irritants that cause asthma are air pollution, cold air or changes in the weather, stress, strong emotional expression, and scented products. In the whole United States, there are 20 million people with asthma, and 9 million of them are children. There are 2 types of lung cancer, which are non-small cell lung cancer and small-cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer usually spreads slower than small cell lung cancer. Some of the gases that bus exhausts releases are nitrogen oxide, ozone, carbon dioxide, sulfur, carbon monoxide, cryogenic liquid, benzyl, trim ethyl benzene, and much more. Nitrogen oxide causes lung disorders, mucus frothy sputum, skin burns, chronic bronchitis, frostbite, and many more. Ozone causes difficulty breathing, smog, which can lead to car crashes, cough, and chronic bronchitis. There are many other gases or chemicals that come out of bus exhausts, and they cause a lot of major health effects.
Bus idling is not widespread in our community because if bus idling was very widespread, then a lot of people will be doing something about it. They will try to solve the problem and they will be making buses stop idling.
Bus idling is a problem that should be handled by the government because bus idling can affect everyone. If the buses don’t stop idling, then soon everyone might get lung diseases. Many people already have lung diseases, and they are dying. Everyone will be suffering from the chemicals that come out of bus exhaust, which can lead to major diseases. Then nobody will go to work, and nobody will go to school. The government can enforce the law because they are powerful.
People in our community should be responsible for stopping bus idling. The principal should be responsible because she is responsible for the student’s health. If the kids have any lung diseases, people wouldn’t go to the school anymore for education. The kids’ parents would say that our school is a really bad school because the principal isn’t caring for the students. Parents should also be responsible because it’s their kids’ health that is affected by bus idling.
There are existing laws for dealing with bus idling. The existing state law states that buses can idle for no more than 5 minutes. The city law states that buses can idle for no more than 3 minutes.
The existing state and city law isn’t adequate to solve the problem of stopping buses from idling. That’s because sometimes, buses idle for more than 20 minutes.
There are no disagreements in our community about bus idling and the way it is being handled.
Some individuals, groups, and organizations with an interest in bus idling are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
The city government is responsible for this problem because bus idling is a serious problem in New York City. The government has already made a law, but law is not being enforced, and besides, every minute counts, so why not make it even less?
